How The T5T Method of Teaching The Five Tibetan Rites All Began
I first learned of the original book's existence that introduced the Five Tibetans to the west, The Eye of Revelation, (download here) from a friend of mine in 2000.
I was going through a challenging period and my friend persuaded me that the 5 Rites would fix 'everything!' Naturally, this made me very sceptical, but to my surprise, she wasn't making it up.
I have enjoyed keeping fit throughout my life and was surprised when The Five Rites did everything my friend said they would. I really did feel more energetic, positive, and clearer than I had for ages - and that was such a relief.
Soon, I became a devoted practitioner and then an even more dedicated teacher! I wanted everyone to benefit in the same way that I had. I was beginning to sound like my friend!
The Five Tibetans were so impactful for me I decided to become a teacher.
My friend and I began teaching Five Tibetans workshops, which were very popular, but I noticed that some students developed lower back pain and needed modifications. The instructions for Rites No 3, 4 & 5, in the original book, The Eye of Revelation (download free), describe over bending in the lower back and neck, which compresses the vertebrae, and discs of the spine. This can cause strain or injury for people who are unfit or have a history of lower back or neck injury.
Also, a significant number of people were hungry for more detailed information. The instructions left by the monks were very simple - some say very limited. Instead of being easy to learn, the descriptions raised more questions than answers - particularly among people who did not have good body/mind awareness, were unfit, overweight, or had suffered from back, neck, wrist, shoulder, or groin pain in the past.
It became clear that the very simple and limited instructions left by the monks were insufficient for some people - and some were considered by experts to be 'unsafe' (without adaptations) for 'normal' people.
I decided to do something about this so that everyone could benefit from the Rites, not just the young and fit, but everyone of all ages and all fitness levels.

Making Them Safer For You, Me, And Everyone To Practice
I consulted with a wide variety of experienced health practitioners to see what they would recommend.
The aim was to maintain the integrity of these ancient movements but to make them more achievable for everyone.
The physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, yoga, Pilates, Feldenkrais, & Occupation Health Practitioners I saw helped me pick the movements apart and find ways of doing them that would avoid the pitfalls and increase the benefits.
Then I took their ideas & tried them out in the living laboratories of my classrooms until I arrived at the step-by-step method I have used ever since, which I call T5T (The Five Tibetans).

I'm happy to say that this collaborative effort and the experiences of all the students who attended T5T workshops - the problems of the past have totally disappeared, provided people follow the program.
It's very satisfying to see many more people can now perform these ancient movements safely and easily.
Most importantly, there is no difference in the great benefits that people achieve from the Five Tibetan Rites, and the movements are the same. The difference is on the inside, with an emphasis on form and technique.
